🌐 The Big Picture

Two Tools, Two Jobs

Taxonomic keys identify WHAT an organism is. Branching tree diagrams show HOW it's related to other life. Scientists use both.

The Binary Sieve

Every step in a taxonomic key is binary (yes/no, true/false). This eliminates possibilities until only one identity remains β€” like a funnel.

Roots = Oldest

In a cladogram, the root (bottom/left) is the common ancestor. Traits appear along the trunk in chronological order β€” lower means older.

Shared = Related

Two organisms that share more derived characteristics are more closely related. Dogs and cats share 4 traits; amphibians and cats share only 1.

Science Changes

Linnaeus used eyes. Darwin added evolutionary thinking. DNA has changed trees again. Good science grows with evidence β€” that's what makes it durable.
